Optimism Brewing received a well-detailed seismic and structural upgrade to its 1920s-era historic structure (Maker Building) on a prime corner on Broadway and Union Street in this densely populated Capitol Hill neighborhood. The vibrant, minimal, and simulating environment has an open feel with full brewing facilities, office mezzanine, and hanging catwalks for the brewmaster.
Existing timber posts and beams were integrated in the design with steel framing, added only where necessary, to replace deteriorated wood members and improve strength. The seismic force-resisting system complements the intersection of materials with heavily bolted braced frames on new concrete foundations.
Food trucks pull into an exterior courtyard on the back of the building, providing ever-changing food options.
